Evolution of Solar Industry in Pakistan

Taking into account the developing needs of energy in Pakistan, the proficient use and development of renewable energy sources have become a significant issue in our country. This has brought forward many national and multinational companies to establish and implement the proper usage of renewable energy sources. EBR Energy is one of the top solar companies in Pakistan that was established in 2009 and has played a vital role in the development and growth of the renewable energy industry in Pakistan.

Naturally, Pakistan is amongst those nations where the sun warms the surface of the Earth consistently even in winters, hence Pakistan can generate great amounts of electricity through solar energy. A study was conducted to discover those areas that are most suitable for the potential of solar energy in our country. The Angstrom equation and the Hargreaves formula were used to calculate monthly solar energy potential by using the monthly climate data. It concluded that the solar radiation intensity remains favorable from March to October throughout the country. It was observed that solar radiation intensity is greater than 200W/m2 from February to October in Sindh, and from March to October in Balochistan. Meanwhile, in NWFP, the Northern Areas, and the Kashmir region, solar radiation is intense from April to September, and from March to October in Punjab. The normal measure of daylight in Pakistan is eight and a half hours each day. It has been observed that the southern part of Pakistan, where the annual solar Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) is above 5.3kWh/m2/day, is ideally suitable for photovoltaic technologies.

The solar energy industry really came into play from the early 2000s whereby, in the beginning, people were skeptical about solar energy, and the solar sector in Pakistan in specific. They remained unconvinced about using this technology and its usage for their energy requirements. Hence, they preferred their conventional energy supply sources over solar-based energy solutions.

After the establishment of EBR Energy, in the span of 10 years, we have seen a massive growth in the awareness and impact of solar energy, and, in the process, we have been able to stand amongst the league of the top leading solar companies in Pakistan.

The major game-changer was when in September 2015 the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) issued net-metering regulations that allowed DISCOs to purchase excess power produced by consumers (residential, commercial, industrial) and net them off against the power consumed from the grid. This really changed the dynamics of how solar energy solutions were approached, especially due to the attraction of this net-metering concept. Ever since then, EBR Energy has aimed to provide customers with a complete overview of the technical and financial benefits of having such a system in place, and subsequently have offered a complete end to end solutions to multiple sectors for a variety of solar energy requirements, regardless of size and location. EBR Energy is listed as an approved vendor by the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB), specifically for implementing net-metering enabled solar grid-tied systems in all four provinces of Pakistan.

Pakistan has a target to add approximately 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 in addition to replacing 10% diesel with biodiesel by 2025. EBR Energy is devoted to helping the country reach this target and touch the lives of as many people as they can.
